A Study on Physical Growth and Development and Nutritional Status of School Boys and Girls in Seoul Special City


Abstract
A study on 8184 (Boys: 4336, Girls: 3293) primary, middle and high school students in
Seoul specialcity was conducted for assessing their physical- growth, development and
nutritional status from May, 1 to July,, 30 1979, and the following results were obtained.
1. Physical Growth and Development
a. Maximum growth was seen during the period from 6 to 15 years of age.
b. The greatest individual differences in growth and development were observed during
10 ~ 14 years of age.
c. The standards of growth of present urban Korean students show much improved then that of 1967.
2. Various Indies about Physical Growth and Nutritional Status.
a. Relative body weight was increased steadily annually and the crossing point of boys and girls appeared at age 10 at which girls surpassed boys and at 13, boys surpassed girls.
b. Relative chest-girth showed narrows chest style in boys and girls from 6 to 13 years of age.
c. The average relative sitting height was 54 in both sexes. d. The Rohrer index was 1.2-1.3 in both sexes.
e. The kaup index was lower than 2.0 in boys from 6 to 14 and in girls from 6 to 13.
It becomes higher than 2.0 after 15 in boys but in girls after 14.
f. Vervaeck index was 74.010-89.942 in boys and 73.791-88.083 in girls. g. Pelidisi index was 89.480-91.792 in boys and 88.770-93.879 in girls.
